I have something a little different here for Episode 56.
In September of 1996, WBZ was celebrating their 75th Anniversary.
The following are two segments from David Brudnoy’s show on September 19th, 1996.
After a retrospective open, David (who I will refer to here as ‘Bruds’ so as to keep the Dave/David name count manageable) joins us with his special guest, Dave Maynard. There’s talk of Dave’s career with Bruds making all sorts of jokes about his age.
Bruds shares a story about listening to WBZ on a drive down to Texas.
Together they take many calls from listeners that share all sorts of memories.
Larry who recalls a very tense call Dave took when he was on the overnights.
Andy from Lynn asking about some former ‘BZ personalities
Barbara with a quick memory
Frank calling back due to a threat
Brian with a heartwarming story
Wolfie being Wolfie
Pat from Waltham with some early recollections of Dave
Mayor Tom Menino – will he get in the dunk tank at the Farm Stand?
Mark who’s a new listener
Claire in RI who asks about a mysterious caller
George who has a bone to pick
Marie who simply believes Dave Maynard is perfect
The tape then jumps to the next segment. David’s guest former WBZ producer and host, Kenny ‘Muck’ Meyer.
We learn of his wide-ranging career at the station. From working with Larry Glick to having his own show.
Ken also gives his thought on the state of radio at the time.
Bruds gives Norm some props!
They take some calls starting with Mark who asks how Ken got his nickname ‘Muck.’
Leon from NY talks about a local radio poll
Paul in Milton asking about a special broadcast
Louise in Framingham who’s not happy about all the sports on WBZ at the time. Bruds tells us the reason why. A ‘why’ that wouldn’t happen for another 13 years.
It was excellent to hear the two Dave’s in great voice once again.
